CLINTON, Iowa ? Two evenly matched teams went at it on Wednesday night at Kehl Arena, and the result was a Midwest Collegiate Conference men?s basketball game that went down to the wire before Ashford managed to hold on for a 72-70 victory over Mount Mercy.
The Mustangs (16-8, 7-6 MCC) trailed by as many as nine points late in the game but still had chances to both win and tie on their final possession, but neither shot would fall as Mount Mercy lost for the third time in four games. The Mustangs continue to fight for home court advantage in the first round of the MCC Tournament later this month.
Senior forward Sam Kenyi finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for Mount Mercy. Junior forward Alex Coleman also ended up with 15 points and grabbed five boards. Junior forward Chad Underwood, who is now 16th on the Mustangs? career scoring chart with 1,107 points, had 10 on Wednesday.
Ashford?s four double-digit scorers were led by Javier Valdez and his 18 points. DeAndre Lowery Jr. had 14 points, Jonathan Wyatt and Peter Tanzillo scored 11 points apiece. Tanzillo completed his double-double with 10 rebounds while Valdez and Devin Ehrich snared seven boards each for the Saints (17-8, 9-4 MCC).
Mount Mercy, which needs to pick up some league wins in the worst way if it wants to host any postseason action, opens a three-game homestand against Waldorf on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center.
