The World Series of Fighting continues its worldwide expansion as they have joined with Japanese promotion Pancrase to start WSOF Japan. The newfound partnership will see the US promotion head to Japan in early-2014 for a soon to be announced event. WSOF president Ray Sefo first announced the new deal during the WSOF 6 preliminary broadcast, with the promotion confirming the move earlier this week via press release.
“Japan has long been a home of top-level martial arts competitions of all types, and I personally have enjoyed some of the best moments of my fighting career there,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “I’m excited to announce this new division with the launch of World Series of Fighting Japan.
“I look forward to working with Pancrase CEO Masakazu Sakai and his team, and together we will produce amazing events for the Japanese fight fans, as well as big opportunities for both Asia-based fighters and MMA fighters around the globe.”
WSOF Japan will mark the second international excursion for the promotion after announcing WSOF Canada earlier this year. WSOF Canada will help host WSOF 7 this December in Vancouver, British Columbia and WSOF Japan will hold its first event early next year. Details for the Japan event are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, though the card will play host to middleweight Yushin Okami’s WSOF debut.
