Japan Cautious in Dealing with China Dispute

As protests continue in China, the Japanese remain cautious in dealing with a situation that has arisen over islands in the East China Sea.

Anti-Japanese demonstrations in China have spread to as many as 100 cities in the huge eastern Asian country. The demonstrations are over disputed islands in the East China Sea. Even as Chinese demonstrators ratchet up the volume, the Japanese themselves remain relatively muted on the issue and the U.S. is clearly trying to remain neutral. Much of the demonstrations are over a Tuesday landing on the main island in the group by two Japanese protestors.

Said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei, "The unlawful landing of the Japanese right-wingers on the Chinese territory of the Diaoyu islands was a gravely provocative action violating Chinese territorial sovereignty." Japan, meanwhile, mindful that September 18 marks the anniversary of the Manchurian Incident ? used as a justification by Japan to invade during that incident ? is taking things slowly.

"The government is trying to stop any further effects on Japanese people in China," Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura, said at a press conference in Tokyo on Tuesday. "All the Japanese government can really do is to wait patiently for the situation to cool down," says Tetsuro Kato, professor emeritus of politics at Tokyo?s Hitotsubashi University. "It tried to rely on the US, but the US is insisting on neutrality over the territorial dispute. So it has few means with which to answer China?s aggression." Many Japanese and Chinese citizens interviewed about the issue were hopeful that it would be put to rest quickly and without and violence. There are many Japanese and Chinese doing business with one another in the area, and they stress the similarities rather than the differences in desires among the people living in the region.
